Effect of Short-Term Low-Temperature Austempering on the Microstructure and Abrasive Wear of Medium-Carbon Low-Alloy Steel

Abstract Nano-bainitic steels have attracted great attention for good wear resistance. In this research, a medium-carbon low-alloyed steel was austempered at low temperature close to its martensite-start various times obtain mixed microstructure of nano-bainite, martensite and retained austenite. The samples were characterised comprehensively by field-emission SEM quantitative XRD. Its two-body abrasive property evaluated sliding on SiC disc. results revealed the formation initial nano-width carbide-free bainitic ferrite (BF) after austempering 10 min, whereas BF size amount both increased with time. exhibited coefficients lower than quenched martensitic sample up 50%. TEM observations showed mechanisms micro-cutting ploughing deformation, including nano-laminate top layer bending deformation in subsurface multiphase microstructure. decreased loss attributed role austenite plasticity.
